Frequently Asked Questions
The first question that everyone needs to ask: Why do I need a college counselor for my child?
Your child is unique with their own talents and faults. The average school counselor to student ratio is about 278:1. Parents are busy - they have jobs, other kids, etc. In spite of this, you want to give your student 1:1 attention to make sure their college application shows all the best parts of them. And you need someone with the experience and time to guide them.
The second question is why you found this page: Why should I hire Oppen Admissions?
I am a solo business. You get me. I’m not going to promise you excellent service and hand you over to someone else. I have teenagers, I’ve worked with teenagers, I know teenagers. No matter what type you have, I’m up to the task. My packages are flexible and there’s some tailored for ADHD kids. Please go to my About Me page to read more.
Other questions:
Do you just support kids going to Ivy League schools?
No. I work with every student at the same level, no matter what schools are on their lists.
What is a balanced list?
All students will get a college list as part of their package. I think a balanced list should have a few hard schools, several best suited academically schools, and some that are easier for admissions. One of my big rules about a college list is that the student needs to like all the schools on the list. We will look for schools that have what is important for your student in an environment they appreciate.
What is “holistic admissions?”
Holistic admissions is a term used by many universities to explain how they review applications. So, if you are worried that your test scores are too low or that you got a few bad grades here and there, the colleges don’t want to judge you on just that data. There are many reasons for low scores and grades, which you can touch on in your application. You also have other parts of the application to shine, and the schools want to see that too!
What is special about your ADHD program?
I know kids with ADHD are not just ignoring me. They may need more help with organization, a break from the pressure, or help to accept that their work isn’t perfect. I will help them in any way I can. We will adapt the schedule to stay on task and keep organized to make application deadlines.
